I almost never, ever show my pencils, primarily because I don't consider them finished on their own. They're very much a means to an end, since I ink all my own work, so they're very rough. Most likely, the next step will be to sit down at my light table and redraw the whole thing so it's cleaner, lighter, and better composed. After that, it's inks. Sometimes I use blue pencils, mostly I use 4H drawing pencils.
I started with a layout, placing every character on the page, and then refined them so the details are actually there. I almost never spot blacks in pencil, and very often I'll erase and rearrange characters as I ink, since there are often issues I don't notice until the final stages.
